How to Survive a Toxic Workplace: A Funny and Inspiring Tale
I recently worked at a company that was a bit of a trap. The client only trusted their team leads and focused solely on recent performance, rather than overall performance. After the contract was ended, they might ask for more work and then threaten to give negative feedback if their demands weren’t met.
The team was unable to find proper solutions, often resorting to using old knowledge and simply tracking hours. They were solely focused on meeting hour goals, not only on one platform but on many. Endless full-day meetings were the norm.
In the end, I was given titles such as “easiest task assigned” and “late deliverer.” However, during meetings before resigning, I was recognized as a talented individual and had been a great ambassador, even pushing the company name to big companies like Miro, VueJs, and even Google.
Lessons Learned:
- Looking back, there are a few things I learned from this experience:
Trust your gut. If something feels off about a company, it probably is. Don’t ignore the red flags.
- Set boundaries. It’s important to set boundaries between your work life and your personal life, and to set boundaries with difficult clients.
- Don’t be afraid to walk away. If you’re in a toxic workplace, it’s okay to leave. Don’t sacrifice your well-being for a job.
Conclusion:
Working at that company was a challenge, but it taught me a lot. I learned to trust my gut, set boundaries, and not be afraid to walk away from a toxic workplace. I also learned that it’s important to have a good sense of humor, even when things are tough.
If you’re ever in a similar situation, remember that you’re not alone. There are people who care about you and want to help. And remember that it’s always darkest before the dawn.
